The future of democracies
Drawing from a range of disciplines, our research takes a wider view on how democracies can or may need to adapt to meet the challenges of climate change.
Critiquing different types of ‘democratic interventions’ and their impacts, we theoretically assess their capacity to react to and help shape the democracies we are in, and the varying degrees to which we can influence the direction of the democratic shifts with these interventions.
Enhancing the authority of deliberative democratic engagement
By seeking engagement with everyone, we ensure that public deliberation and conversations about democratic innovations themselves are democratic, and respond authentically to current political contexts.
In particular, for a process to be contextually authoritative and truly impactful, we should seek the full participation and consideration of people that appear to advocate for undemocratic approaches, or are in favour of policies that conflict with the current policy trajectory, such as those directly opposed to carbon-reducing policies.
